Constipation is the term used to describe when your baby or child is not opening their bowels regularly or sufficiently. Constipation can make it hard or painful for your baby or child to pass their stools and cause them extreme discomfort. Usually constipation is short term but if your baby or child is regularly experiencing hard, painful stools it could be related to their diet.

Constipation is usually caused by inadequate fluid or fibre in your baby or child’s diet and this can happen due to changes in their diet or activity levels. In babies the causes of constipation tend to be due to inadequate feeding, introduction of new foods during the weaning period due to a reduction of fluid or because the weaning foods being introduced are low in fibre. In children long term constipation is likely to be caused by a diet low in fruits, vegetables, fibre and fluid. Our dietitian will assess your baby or child and give a treatment plan to suit them.
Our specialist dietitian will assess and treat your baby or child for constipation by assessing their symptoms and stool type using an evidence based tool. Constipation in a toddler and child is usually related to an diet which low in fibre, fruits, vegetables and fluid. Our dietitian will assess your baby and child’s feeding regime, weaning plan and/or dietary intake to ensure they are receiving adequate nutrition and fluid tp enable them to reach their full growth potential.
Chronic and long term constipation can usually be treated by changing your baby or child’s feeding regime, weaning plan and/or dietary intake which may be causing their constipation. Each treatment plan is personalised and different according to the cause of your baby or child’s constipation.
